INITIATE presented at the INCITE workshop

On 15 May 2025, our Project Coordinator, Eric van Dijk from TNO, presented the INITIATE project during the Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) panel at the first European Innovation Centre for Industrial Transformation and Emissions (INCITE) Workshop on Innovative Techniques in the Iron and Steel Sector.

Eric’s presentation focused on SEWGS technology as a decarbonisation route for the steel industry within the INITIATE concept using industrial symbiosis. The INTIATE coupling of the steel industry with the ammonia and urea sectors is presented as a user case for this decarbonisation technology.

The workshop, held in Seville, Spain, focused on key technological developments in the iron and steel sector relevant to the upcoming revision of the Iron and Steel BREF, scheduled for 2026. It provided a platform to exchange the latest innovations in areas such as depollution, defossilisation, and the circular economy, aiming to gather early input for the revision process.

The event also served as a forum for industry and technology providers to showcase cutting-edge solutions designed to achieve zero pollution, climate neutrality, and improved resource efficiency. Participants, including stakeholders from industry, finance, and permitting authorities, discussed the maturity, environmental performance, and economic viability of these technologies. The workshop further encouraged active engagement with INCITE and the submission of technical information on innovative processes.

INCITE is the EU’s central hub for identifying and assessing innovative industrial techniques that enhance environmental performance, supporting goals such as defossilisation and improved resource efficiency. It monitors global developments, evaluates their readiness and impact, and feeds promising solutions into EU environmental standards. By removing informational barriers and enabling flexible permitting, INCITE aims to accelerate green industrial transformation and support frontrunners in the sector.
